Sewing Machines for Zara’s House

Our local community of Newcastle, the Lower Hunter Region and Lake Macquarie came up with the goods when we, Hunter Adults Financial Collaborative put out an appeal for sewing machines, over lockers and sewing equipment.

Cherylin Beever of HAFC, regularly attends Zara’s house on a regular volunteer basis and was asked if HAFC could provide any sewing machines to assist the sewing program. The board discussed the request and decided to purchase some second hand reconditioned machines and use our social media platforms to access the community for donations.

With a collection of 19 sewing Machines, 2 over lockers and a table full of materials, scissors, cottons, threads, needles and sewing goodies, Cherylin and Doug Beever of Hunter Adult Financial Collaborative presented Mary of Zara’s House, Jesmond, Newcastle with the donations to support the local community of Women and Children refugees who attend the local centre.

Zara’s House provides support to refugee women and children to meet Australian women, to share hospitality, ideas, culture, learning and local opportunities.

It was an overwhelming response from our local community to be able to provide these women and children with sewing machines and equipment, enabling sewing classes to continue at Zara’s House.

Our Not For Profit charity, Hunter Adults Financial Collaborative is proud to be a part of the sewing project creating independence and creativity for our local refugee community to design, create and produce clothing for themselves and their families. We want to thank our local community for their kind and generous donations.

We continue to strengthen our refugee community through supporting applicants with resume writing, interview skills and finding employment or developing their business ideas and setting up a thriving business here in our community of Newcastle, the Lower Hunter region and Lake Macquarie.”
